A snowplow for a Southwestern Museum may seem a little strange, but PSRMA's snowplow is such a unique piece of equipment that it couldn't be passed up!
Acquisition of the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company snowplow was an outgrowth of an earlier project spearheaded by member Dick Pennick, an attempt to acquire the last remaining Mason Bogie steam locomotive in existence. Owner of the classic engine, Universal Oil Product Company-C&H Group of Palatine, Illinois, turned down our request after months of deliberation by company officials to decide on the final recipient. In the final analysis the Ford Museum at Dearborn and PSRMA were the only ones left in the runningo, Ford won out, so Dick took the opportunity to suggest alternate donations that might be of interest to the Museum.
In December of 1969 he was notified that an old Russel snowplow was available if we wanted it. It was graciously accepted, and indefinite storage was arranged at the company site in Calumet, Michigan, on the most northerly peninsula of the state.
The PSRMA donation is standard gauge, wooden, and was built by the Russel Car & Plow Company (the Company said in the 1880s), and was sold to the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company, in 1925 for $12,800. It weighs 40 tons.
When funds are available, it will join the growing collection of Museum displays, and who knows?...it may even be used to plow snow someday,..! DICK PENNICK
BOARD BRIEFS
A BRIEF REVIEW OF REPORTS MADE AND ACTIONS TAKEN AT THE JUNE 1, 1971, BOARD OF DIRECTORS' MEETING OF PSRMA.
1) In his report, President Kerr announced the insurance company would pay SDG&E for damage incurred during removal of the Museum water tank recently.
President Kerr also reported he had been informed the Flying Scotsman may come to San Diego this year.
Captain Chandler of Miramar has okayed PSRMA's request for additional storage for two more locomotives.
President Kerr said he has had no response from the Del Mar Fair concerning a Museum display or booth.
2) Bob DiGiorgio reported about one-half of the work of reassembling the Shay following a recent boiler inspection has been completed. He added it would take at least one more full work party before a steamup would be possible, and did not want to set a steamup date.
3) Dave Parkinson reported work parties would be set up to get a switch frog and a Scotch boiler donated to PSRMA.
4) The Board approved a $16.50 round trip fare for the planned July 17 excursion to Los Angeles aboard the private railroad cars of Jack Stodelle.
5) Dave Parkinson, reporting for the Land Committee, announced PSRMA is included in the consultant's final plans for the Sweetwater Regional Park.
6) The Board approved a motion to increase the REPORT budget to $25 a month from $20 a month.
7) By concensus the Board will be polled at a later date concerning a new brochure submitted by the Publications Committee.
8) The Board authorized a $35.00 deposit to allow PSRMA to participate in the Flea Market again this year on November 7th at Mission Valley.
9) Kerr's proposed fund-raising brochure for the French locomotive was okayed. The Board also authorized Kerr to establish a special fund for the French project.
10) The Board moved to extend a $125 loan from San Diego Trust & Savings for another 120 days.
