SHAY LOCOMOTIVE TO COME TO S. D.
Yes! That's right PSRMA' s former Feather River Railway shay locomotive No. 5 is coming to San Diego.
Because of the locomotive's length and weight to move to OET via the snap-track method was an impossible task. On top of that the Santa Fe would not hear of leasing a spot at Perris for locomotive storage. Like they said, potato season is nearing and "we will need all the trackage available in Perris."
Because of these obstacles it was necessary to bring the locomotive to San Diego. A very good spur was found near the Santa Fe's 22nd Street yard office which could be used. The spur formerly served the Standard Iron Works and is entirely fenced.
Many parts were also donated to the museum by the Georgia Pacific Corporation along with the shay. The many parts also will be stored in San Diego. PSRMA must thank Walter H. Barber and Walt Hayward for their help in providing a storage area for these very important items.
RAIL BUS PROGRESS REPORT
The Santa Maria Valley railbus has kind of dropped out of the limelight with the coming of our steamers. But don't think that it is forgotten.
Work has proceeded on this restoration project. Much body work has been done since the bus was moved to Lakeside early this year. Doug Reynolds recently finished overhauling the engine for the bus. The engine was recently installed in the bus. Thanks to Doug and Walt Hayward for their labor in the installation.
WE NEED A TREASURER
Charles Gerdes, our present treasurer, has resigned his position starting June 30. His resignation was accepted with much regret, but was necessary due to changes in Chuck's employment. Sorry to lose a fine officer who has done a tremendous job for the museum.
IT'S GRIZZLY FLATS ON JULY 16.
Live steam and all. The members of the museum are invited to participate in a July 16, trip to visit Ward Kimball's Grizzly Flats Railroad in San Gabriel.
Among the interesting equipment at Grizzly Flats are a locomotive that came from a sugar plantation in Hawaii and an old narrow gauge caboose that once ran in California. No, the caboose did not come from the S. P.'s Keeler branch. It was formerly Pacific Coast Railway's No. 2, and spent all it's days running between San Luis Obispo and Los Olivos, halfway between Santa Maria and Santa Barbara.
Transportation will be by automobile with a $1 participant's fee. More complete information on this tour is included with this issue of the Report.
MOTOR CAR TRIP MEXICO
A grand time was had by those going on the section car trip from Mexicali to Riito on the Sonora-Baja California Railroad. The group left Mexicali on cars provided by Terry Durkin and Walt Hayward at 8:50 a. m. on Memorial Day.
Each person on the trip paid $10 with all monies above expenses going to the locomotive fund. The group also stopped in El Centro and had a great time observing the Southern Pacific's operations in the Imperial Valley.
EQUIPMENT ROUNDUP
The upcoming issue of The Dispatcher will feature pictures and information on the various railroad equipment owned by San Diego groups and individuals. PSRMA equipment will be among the equipment to be featured.
Also coming in a Iater issue of the Dispatcher will be a guide to railroad operation in the San Diego area. This will include "how" the operation takes place as well as the where and why of railroad facilities in the area. These two issues will be of great interest to many San Diego fans.
